by April Tanner, CCE, Credit Manager, Kimball Equipment
Board of Directors

Speakers: Heather Hansen, CBA, Credit Manager and Scott Lantz, SHRM-SCP, Human Resources Manager for IFA

Topic: Coaching to Win

ICEL members enjoyed a dynamic presentation from Heather Hansen, CBA Intermountain Farmers Association (IFA) Credit Manager and her co-worker Scott Lantz MBA, SHRM-SCP the Human Resources Manager.  They shared information about forming a positive company culture.

Scott is a trained performance coach for IFA; he brought some new ideas and reminders of ideas that need remembered.

In relation to our working teams – building them, keeping them, and expanding them – this could be the team we supervise, supervise us, or those that make the rest of our world go round – we should remember these thoughts:

  • Let the team know where they fit in the big picture
  • Be descriptive of what winning looks like
  • Be a coach and know who your coach is
  • Know the rules/guidelines/boundaries
  • One of my favorite thoughts from this session was what Scott said in this section, “You cannot manage a secret”
  • Awards/Prizes go a long way.  They don’t have to be expensive – but recognition is always appreciated.
  • Guiding takes knowing the difference:
    • Measurement = Past
    • Scorecard = Right Now

Regularly (daily/weekly/monthly) track the scorecard and make appropriate coaching type of actions.Use past scorecards and other models of tracking for bi-annual and annual reviews to look back at the past, recognize challenges and achievements, and set new goals to create new scorecards.

The leadership/coaching bottom line was that:
  • Mindset creates trust
  • Design creates engagement
  • Scorekeeping creates results
Scott and Heather use the following books:
  • The Game of Work by Charles A. Coonradt
  • Scorekeeping for Success by Charles A. Coonradt
  • Leadership and Self-deception by the Arbinger Institute
