The Intermountain Credit Education League (ICEL) and Credit & Financial Development Division (CFDD) combined meeting for January was held on January 8, 2026. We were thrilled to hear from Shane Inglesby, CCE who retired the next day. His presentation “An Old Man Looks Back: Lessons from a Retiring Credit Manager” was a repeat from what he presented at Credit Congress in Cleveland, OH in June 2025.
Shane has the happy knack of sharing stories from his experience that are filled with humor and life knowledge. He started the meeting sharing his work experience background with over 30 years of credit management knowledge. Shane covered his NACM origin story where he worked with D&B creating reports before transitioning to a copy as a credit manager. He spoke about the importance of the education he has received from NACM for his CCE designation and the other continuing education options. Shane encouraged us to be proactive in our association with NACM and our credit peers; take the opportunities to write articles, attend seminars and activities, reach out to people who you want as a mentor, be a mentor, and aggressively seeking these opportunities.
As a manager, Shane started a book club with his colleagues and team. Shane shared with us some of the winners and those we can skip if we start a book club of our own. He then highlighted ten books that he returned to for a reread. That list is below for your reference.
Another lesson Shane taught was that we, as humans, learn our internal voice at a very young age and have to work hard as adults to learn how to get out of our heads and out of our way to combat negative thoughts.
He shared some tips for what to do when we get in our own way or fall prey to listening to an internal negative voice. His slide deck is linked in his retirement article if you would like to get these tips for yourself.
Thank you, Shane, for the time you spent preparing for this presentation and for your many years of dedicated service to NACM. The room at ICEL and CFDD was filled with peers who had been mentored by you. Your enduring legacy will touch NACM for years to come. We will miss you and wish you great joy in this next chapter in your life.
