Our NACM affiliate talks a lot about education and certification. The staff sets up seminars, education sessions, and has two associations with credit education groups (CFDD and ICEL) to allow its members the opportunity to continue their educational pursuits. Why the push? Why the emphasis?

Professionals in credit and accounting departments have the not easy task of protecting the company assets by making sound, educated, and effective business decisions. A credit manager could attend the courses taught by NACM once and call it good. They have learned how to do their job; that should be enough. Right?

During a particularly difficult time in my life a wise friend said to me, “What is the worst that can happen?” I went on to detail all the terrible, potential outcomes of my situation, focusing on the very worst results.

When I was finished, he asked me how likely was it that the very worst would happen. I had to admit that something less than the very worst was the likely outcome. Then he reminded me that any outcome, short of death, came with the chance to recover and often brought about new, unexpected opportunities.

Cybercrimes have been on the rise over the past several years, and remote work has only made it more difficult to mitigate those risks. Nearly 50% of companies reported falling victim to fraud in the past 24 months, the second highest reported level in the last 20 years, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers fraud survey. Businesses also reported roughly $42 billion in losses in the last two years due to fraud.

ICEL was pleased to hear from two of our own, Erik Wright, CBF and Shanna Diaz, CCE in January 2022.
