2019 - The Present
Several weeks ago, while driving past the Hilltop United Methodist Church in Sandy, I read an inspirational message posted in front of the chapel. It read, "Today has never happened before, make it great." Perhaps I was in an overly reflective mood but I took that message and projected it to the future known as 2019. I contemplated how 2019 has never happened before and that I truly have the potential to make it great.
Often times, we get caught up in the mental mindset of "coulda, woulda, shoulda." To be more literate, it means - could have, would have, should have. We allow ourselves to constantly replay the past and what could have been done differently to improve upon the outcome. Bottom line - it's an effort in futility.
Yesterday is history. It cannot be changed. We should only reflect on the past long enough to learn from any mistakes that may have been made. However, constantly dwelling upon the past denies the opportunity and privilege provided by the present.
Yes, we may need to dust ourselves off a bit from our experience. Yes, we may be a bit bruised through the process. But...we cannot allow the dust to stain nor should we continue to beat ourselves up to the point that the bruise will never heal.
2019 is a new year. We come into it older and wiser. Imagine the possibilities! Or do you? Are you perhaps approaching the change in the calendar as "just another year in the process?" If so, you are underestimating your power to create change.
Internal conversations play a great role in determining our approach to life. If you are not seeing the possibility in a new year, the conversation with yourself needs to change!
Human beings are like water. We tend to take the path of least resistance. However, taking that path means we are not in control.
We must resist laziness. Life really is worth planning. Life really is worth managing.
Look at the big picture. Determine where you want to be then set small, short-term goals that will lead to the desired outcome. Every day, every hour should be managed with a focus and plan to achieve the desired result.
2019 truly is a gift and it is one that can be made great. It just all depends upon how you choose to approach the year.
As we have just experienced the season of giving, may we be generous and give ourselves the greatest of gifts. "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present." Enjoy the present. Live in the present and make the most of it!
